carved from a 500 year old red cedar from haida gwaii, this totem pole has been raised to promote northwest coast culture and art in honour of haida artist bill reid. it offers people a glimpse into the art of haida gwaii and other aboriginal communities up and down the northwest coast, educating younger haida and first nations artists about reid's art and his importance in the renaissance of northwest coast art and culture. the pole has been calved by jim hart (haida hereditary chief, 7idansuu pronounced "ee-dan-soo"), who once learned from master artist bill reid and is now assisted by ernie swanson (giinowaan) and his son, carl hart. documenting the construction of this magnificent piece of haida art offered me the opportunity to learn and devolope a fasination with this rich and complex culture soaked in mythological ideas and beliefs.
